Development works are being continued at Kaunas Airport with the aim of creating the most developed and adapted aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul infrastructure in the entire region. In July, another stage was completed - the development of a new apron and fire station reconstruction works.
New hangars and taxiway
Kaunas Airport infrastructure development works are nearing completion. Another phase has just been completed, during which the aerodrome platform was widened with the installation of a taxiway of almost 15 thousand square meters. This runway will help aircraft reach the newly built service hangars quickly and safely, and now temporarily serves as an additional space for aircraft parking.
We would like to remind that currently, next to the new apron, there is an ongoing construction of a new aircraft painting hangar, which will house “MAAS Aviation”, the third largest company providing such services in the world. This hangar will upgrade the most common aircraft at Lithuanian airports - Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
It is estimated that after the completion of the contract, the companies operating at the airport and providing MRO services will be able to admit as many as 11 aircraft at the same time.
According to Kaunas Airport manager Karolis Matulaitis, the end of this stage is very significant, as MRO activities can attract large investments and create new jobs.
"After completing the infrastructure development tasks, we will be able to create more than 400 highly qualified, well-paid jobs. This MRO project is really ambitious and has a lot of challenges, but I believe that its completion will bring significant opportunities to the Kaunas air gate”, says K. Matulaitis.
According to the airport manager, another service hangar can be built next to the new apron, for which the area is already being prepared. Representatives of the airport are already actively working with the world's largest aircraft repair companies and are constantly seeking to attract new market players to Lithuania or to further expand the activities of companies already operating in the country, offering solutions that meet market needs.
Renovated fire rescue station
Naming the latest works, K. Matulaitis also emphasizes the recently reconstructed fire rescue station of Kaunas Airport. This was necessary because part of the area in front of the current fire station will be used for MRO infrastructure and would interfere with prompt deployment of fire trucks to the area. This also led to the reorganization of fire trucks movement.
"When planning development and improvement of the airport infrastructure, security remains a top priority and there can be no limits. In the near future, we intend to upgrade the fire-fighting equipment - fire trucks, therefore, it can be said that we are renewing fundamentally and we will start the new stage of aviation prepared even better”, says K. Matulaitis.
