Kaunas Airport summed up 2019 and announced a new record - last year, it served a total of 1,160,682 passengers (15% more than in 2018). It is the highest number in the history of the airport, not counting the reconstruction of Vilnius airport runway in 2017, when all aircraft were diverted to Kaunas. This year, the country's second-largest airport hopes to keep up with volume and is preparing for a bigger expansion.

According to Karolis Matulaitis, director of Kaunas Airport, the figures achieved last year show a definite growth of this air gate. The second largest airport in the country has also been actively developing not only the segment of low cost airlines but also areas of charter and traditional airlines.

“2019 has become the most productive period for the airport in its lifetime. Not only have we reached record passenger numbers, but for the first time in the global context, the airport has been introduced as one of the fastest growing airports in Europe, which is a remarkable result of our work”, says Matulaitis.

According to the manager, since 2019, the monthly traffic target of 100 thousand passengers has become common practice, and a few years ago this was an exception rather than a rule. This was influenced not only by the beloved old directions but also by the newly emerging directions of Italy and Germany, which are very relevant for development of business partnerships. It is important that charter flights started at Kaunas airport last year, which also contributed to the growth of the passenger flows.

It is stated that despite the increased passenger flows, high quality of passenger service is maintained at Kaunas Airport, which is very important for the airlines, the passengers and the airport itself.

K. Matulaitis hopes that this year will be no less successful for the air gate and mentions the planned changes.

Matulaitis reveals his future plans saying that: “One of the most important projects is the development of the passenger terminal, which will be financed by the company and will pay off in 10 years. Already in 2022 passengers will enjoy a much more spacious and renovated building of Kaunas Airport it should increase from the existing 7,300 sq. m. up to 10 800 sq. m. We estimate that after the reconstruction we will be able to service about 2 million passengers. We will also strive to ensure that any inconvenience caused to passengers during the construction works is minimized”.

In 2020, passengers at Kaunas Airport will fly “Ryanair”, “Wizzair”, “LOT Polish Airlines”, and “Norwegian Air Shuttle“ airlines.
